32 years of AJOC: Job insecurity among the main challenges of the class

Africa-Press – Cape verde. COMMENTS

The president of the Association of Journalists of Cabo Verde pointed out, this Thursday, the precariousness of work, precarious conditions of private bodies and empty newsrooms in public bodies among the main challenges that the class still faces, in Cape Verde, along with other constraints to freedom of the press.

In his statement, within the scope of the 32 years of the creation of the AJOC, Geremias Furtado said that, thanks to the pioneering journalists in Cape Verde and former union leaders, the class is now making some gains, but that there are still challenges that must be overcome.

“We don’t have situations of physical violence against journalists as it happens in our neighboring countries, but I believe that we have our challenges, within our reality”, underlined the journalist.

Public bodies with empty newsrooms

Among these challenges, “which in one way or another, end up putting press freedom at risk”, is, according to him, precarious work, attacks in digital media, precarious conditions of private bodies and an insufficient number of journalists in the bodies media audiences.

“I would like to highlight the empty newsrooms in public bodies, which contributes to the decline in the quality of information, since the journalist is overloaded with three or more outputs in a day, conditioning the conclusion of his work in the best way”, he said.

Geremias Furtado therefore calls on the Government to pay attention to this aspect and promote recruitment in public bodies, to create conditions for the integration of new journalists in these bodies.

PCCS Inforpress waiting

Among other issues, he was also concerned about the delay in completing the PCCS process for Inforpress professionals, as well as the situation of TCV’s management, with a director who resigned two years ago.

AJOC was founded on November 24, 1990, with the aim of promoting freedom of the press and the defense of the socio-professional rights and interests of the journalistic class.
