
Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Institute of the Sea gathered this Wednesday partners from various ministries and NGOs to share information about the new monitoring project for the good management of resources, coasts and the marine environment, using satellite data.
It is, according to the member of the Board of Directors of the Institute of the Sea (IMar), Vito Melo, the GMES & Africa project, which he classified as of “great importance” for the African sub-region since, he summed up. The use of data from satellite and earth observation technology fills a gap and allows time series of data and the spatial and temporal coverage of desired space.
Co-funded by the Commission of the European Union and the Commission of the African Union, of a pan-African nature, that is, it extends to almost all African countries, GMES & Africa has coordination at the level of the different economic communities on the continent and intends to use earth observation data in monitoring and managing coastal marine ecosystems.
In the case of Cape Verde, coordination is provided by ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States), headquartered at the University of Ghana with decentralization in matters related to specific technical skills in project implementation.
