In handball, Cape Verde participates in the world championship of the sport, and in basketball it is one step away from qualifying for the world cup. The two selections promise Cape Verdeans great pride in this year that is now beginning.
Cape Verde already has a guaranteed presence in the Handball World Cup. After making history in the African Championship, in which the national team was runner-up, the Creole team is preparing to participate in the Handball World Cup, taking place in Sweden and Poland from the 12th to the 29th of January.
The national team is currently in Portugal for the third phase of preparation, where friendly matches are taking place with the local team, and from the 5th to the 8th of January it will participate in an international tournament in Switzerland, also involving Japan and Austria.

The president of the Handball Federation, Tony Teixeira, sets out to overcome the group stage as an objective in the world and points out that “a good job” is being done for a “good participation” in the world championship.
“We hope to get through the group stage and, from then on, what happens will always be a victory for Cape Verdean handball. The new generation has already shown that it always wants more. I believe we can do much better”, considers Tony Teixeira.
Cape Verde in group C
Cape Verde is part of group C of the competition, along with Sweden, Brazil and Uruguay. 32 teams participate in the handball world championship, with Denmark being the current champion.
From Cape Verde, those called up are Élcio Fernandes, Luís Almeida, Edmilson Gonçalves, Paulo Moreno, Elledy Semedo, Guatther Furtado, Leandro Semedo, Edmilson Garcia, Edmilson Oliveira, Nelson Pina, Felisberto Landim, Délcio Pina, Gilson Correia, Paulo Andrade , Bruno Landim, Flávio Fortes and Admilson Furtado.
Basketball team one step away from the world cup
With regard to basketball, Cape Verde continues to fight for the first qualification for the world of the modality. At the end of 2022, he managed to qualify for the last qualifying stage, to be played in February.
Emanuel Trovoada, national coach, wants to take this archipelago, for the first time, to the world cup, but for that he asks for the union of all Cape Verdeans around these objectives.
The Basketball World Cup will be held between August 25 and September 10, 2023. It will be the biggest in the history of the sport, with the participation of 32 teams, instead of 24 and for the first time it will be held in three countries, Japan , Indonesia and the Philippines.
