January 13: Austelino Correia calls for the Culture of Tolerance

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The president of the National Assembly (AN), Austelino Correia, yesterday called for a culture of tolerance in the country and the need to build spaces for understanding and consensus, in defense of democratic institutions and the normalization of the State.

He recalled that the 13th of January marks a fundamental turning point in the history of Cape Verde, in its long struggle for freedom.

However, he stated that there is a need for the “contradictory and necessary tolerance, without extremism and radicalism”.

Austelino Correia exhorted everyone to the need to build spaces for understanding and consensus, in defense of democratic institutions and the normalization of the State.

Quoted by Inforpress, the president of AN recalled that parliament is the privileged space for building the understandings and consensus that the country needs.

Appeal to a culture of tolerance

“It is essential to remember that the culture of tolerance, acceptance of difference and strategic understanding regarding the future of the country is fundamental for building the dignity of our people and strengthening our democracy. This fact must always be remembered on the 13th of January and (…) must be present in our daily political, social and institutional action”, he emphasized.

This source recalled that there have been 32 years of increasing progress and continued improvement in the living conditions and dignity of the population.

But he warned that, on the other hand, just as on an international scale democracy needs a new global analysis, in Cape Verde it needs to be taken care of.

obvious threats

On this day of freedom and democracy, the head of the parliamentary house drew attention to some “evident threats”, namely, “the combined effects of the increase in poverty and unemployment, the emergence of a radical and intolerant discourse in the face of present difficulties, an evident increase in demagogic and populist behavior”.

Attitudes that need to be opposed, when in his view, “the fight against poverty must continue to be a priority”, having seized the moment to “mark and encourage and point out the measures that have been adopted by the Government, in this direction” .
