Porto Novo: Casa de Meio agro-food transformation center has already started producing

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The agri-food transformation center at Casa de Meio, Porto Novo, Santo Antão has already started operating. This unit, which employs a group of women, began to produce liqueurs and spices using 100% local products.

“The agro-food transformation center is producing liqueurs and seasonings with 100% of Casa de Meio products”, advanced the management of this transformation unit, to Inforpress.

Installed as part of the project for young farmers in this locality, promoted by the Association for the Defense of the Heritage of Mértola (Portugal).

The center is also producing natural juice, in addition to investing in local cuisine: cachupa, couscous, fonguinhos and daughters.

It should be recalled that the Casa de Meio young farmers project, inaugurated in October 2022, under the umbrella of Portuguese cooperation, with the aim of establishing young farmers in Casa de Meio, through the generation of self-employment in agriculture.

the first fruits

For this purpose, the State of Cape Verde allocated around 30 plots of land, which are beginning to bear “the first fruits”.

Currently, they are already producing and sending common potatoes, sweet potatoes, carrots, squash, tomatoes, peppers, among others, to the market.

The project was co-financed by the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, the Porto Novo City Council, the National Water and Sanitation Agency, the Camões Institute, the Global Environment Facility and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.
