Africa-Press – Cape verde. The president of the National Assembly criticized, this Friday, the 20th, what he considers to be a “biased reading” of the data from the “Afrobarometer” study, which placed the National Assembly as the second most corrupt institution in Cape Verde, according to the perception of the public. Cape Verdeans surveyed.
Austelino Correia told the press that he respects the study and Afrosondagem, the institution that leads the Afrobarometer team in Cape Verde, but questions the reason for the negative reading of the data.
According to the study, the National Police continues to lead the list of institutions identified by 25% of Cape Verdeans as the most corrupt, followed by the National Assembly (24%), the Presidency of the Republic and the Prime Minister.
“This is a natural, quiet study. We must work with study. But this study had a slightly biased reading from my point of view. Note that the institution that is in first place in the perception of corruption is the National Police, with 26%. It means that 75% of Cape Verdeans do not think that the Police is corrupt”, he argued.
negative angle
Likewise, with the National Assembly, Autelino Correia lets it be understood that a negative angle was chosen for reading the data.
“The Assembly has 24%, in second place. It means that 76% of Cape Verdeans do not have the perception that the National Assembly is corrupt”, he said, questioned why, in disclosing the data, it was not chosen to say that 76% of Cape Verdeans consider that the National Assembly is not is corrupt, instead of saying it is the second most corrupt institution.
“Nothing concrete”
In addition, he added, the study talks about the perception of corruption, with nothing concrete or objective, to then question why only the police and the National Assembly were mentioned and not referred to other institutions, where there was also an increase in corruption. perception of corruption.
“As a National Assembly, we know that we are the most scrutinized institution in Cape Verde, this scrutiny is very good because in fact it makes us reflect more, ponder more and try to do our work even better”, he acknowledged, pointing out, on the other hand, that the National Assembly, in terms of image among Cape Verdeans, improved its percentage from 33 to 48%.
“This part was not interested in saying. Therefore, we need to pay attention when reading the data so that we can inform Cape Verdeans correctly. Therefore, it is necessary to read the numbers in a very coherent way to prevent us from informing them in the wrong way”, he said.
Austelino Correia also added that the National Assembly had already requested the complete study from Afrosondagem to analyze all the data in more depth and present an official position.
