Africa-Press – Cape verde. Taxi drivers in Cidade da Praia implemented, about a month ago, a rate of 1500$00 for a trip between the airport and the capital’s neighborhoods, during the day, and up to 2,500 at night. The decision, whose legality is not known, is revolting passengers.
The complaint arrives through the page of the Ombudsman of Praia, when sharing the report of a passenger who arrived in Praia, one day this week, around 11:35 am and was charged this amount.
“Today, at 11:35 am, coming from Boavista, we went to the Taxis parking area and asked a taxi driver what the cost of a trip to Achada de Santo António was, and he replied that it was 1,500$00. All the others said that was the current value”, reported the passenger.
Faced with the astonishment and revolt of this customer, he said, he captured images and promised to report the situation, after which one of the taxi drivers offered to make the ride for the amount of 1000$00 escudos, as usual.
He questions where the decision to implement this tariff came from, which he considers unfair and unacceptable, taking into account the drop in fuel prices.
Tariff has been charged for about a month
This amount, it seems, is already being charged at least since mid-December last year.
According to a source from A NAÇÃO, on December 22, she was also outraged when, in broad daylight, around 11:30 am, the taxi driver also charged her 1500$00.
“I complained, I said it was absurd, even with the increase in fuel, but he said, at the time, that it was the price!”.
Still according to the report of another citizen, she also paid 1500$00 on the 1st of January, when returning from vacation, on the Airport – Cidadela route.
“When I arrived at the airport, I got into the taxi and, halfway there, he informed me that now I had to pay 1500 escudos. I questioned why, since a month before, when I went on vacation, I paid a thousand escudos, and he just said that now that was the amount charged by everyone”, explains our source.
Association of silent taxi drivers
This online contacted, this Saturday, by telephone, the president of the Association of Taxi Drivers to get a reaction on this supposed new rate, but, at the time, he said he was busy and promised to return the call later.
But, after further attempts, he stopped answering the phone, so it was not possible to hear this representation of Praia taxi professionals.
The Nation will try, however, to talk to the entity that regulates taxi fares in the City, with a view to clarifying the matter and understanding whether it is a legally implemented tariff or not.
