Guterres acknowledges “debt of gratitude” to Amílcar Cabral

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Secretary General of the United Nations, António Guterres, said this Monday, 23, that as a Portuguese he has a “debt of gratitude” towards Amílcar Cabral, for what this National Hero of Cape Verde did for the democratization of his country.

“As a Portuguese I have a debt of gratitude that I cannot forget in relation to Amílcar Cabral and his contribution to the democratization of my own country [Portugal] and decolonization”, said Guterres who is in Cape Verde to participate in the Summit of Oceanos that takes place in Mindelo.

The Secretary General of the United Nations made this “recognition” on the sidelines of the meeting he held with the President of the Republic, José Maria Neves Palácio no Povo, in São Vicente.

António Guterres recalled that this is the centenary year of Amílcar Cabral, “a fundamental reference” for the United Nations.

Homage to Cape Verde

After the meeting with the Cape Verdean PR, which lasted about 30 minutes, he said that the “fundamental objective” of the meeting was, on the part of the Secretary General of the United Nations, “to pay homage” to Cape Verde.

“This is a country that is the victim of being an island state and of a deeply unfair international order in terms of finance and trade, and that is why I wanted to express to the President of the Republic the total solidarity of the United Nations with Cape Verde”, concluded António Guterres .

The leader of the United Nations also left the hope that the effort that Cape Verde has been making, namely in the protection of the oceans, as a “great maritime State”, will succeed and be “deeply rewarded” by the international community as well.
