São Nicolau: Gualberto do Rosário says the island “is not doing well”

Africa-Press – Cape verde. Gualberto do Rosário, economist and former government official, who has been very critical of the development process on his home island, said yesterday, in the city of Ribeira Brava, that the island “is not doing well”.

This is not the first time that Gualberto do Rosário has drawn attention to the situation of local socio-economic development, and the problem of transport has been especially highlighted by him on social networks.

This time, on the sidelines of the sixth meeting of the General Council of the National Association of Cape Verdean Municipalities, where he presented the panel “Strategic Vision for the Development of São Nicolau”, he again warned that the island “is not going well”.

Quoted by Inforpress, the former president of the Cabo Verde Chamber of Tourism recalled all the development potential that the island has, stressing that “it is not an island to be considered peripheral”, only.

In his opinion, he said, it has many resources, both cultural and natural, mainly in the field of the maritime economy.

“It has the two largest bays in Cape Verde, São José and Tarrafal, both very rich and lend themselves to various types of economic activities, but it also has the city of Ribeira Brava which has immense value in the tourist area”, he highlighted.

To reverse this scenario, it is necessary to bet, as he defends, on its potential, in partnership with private individuals who “are available to invest”.

Mayor calls for the resolution of transport problems

José Martins, mayor of Ribeira Brava, warned, once again, that the development of the island involves building “structuring” projects, which encourage employment. Cited by the same source, he clarified that this is a way of “stopping” the loss of young population.

Likewise, he called for the resolution of the transport problem to and from São Nicolau, which continues to be an obstacle to development. José Martins also defended the construction of the 6km expressway, using “tunnels”, to connect Ribeira Brava to Tarrafal.

“Bringing these two urban centers closer to the island, as a way of boosting the local economy”, he appealed.
