Africa-Press – Cape verde. The president of the Amor Farapó group, António Avis, received a cheque for 1,500 contos Thursday from the Coty council of Santa Catarina do Fogo l referring to the second tranche of support for the construction of the carriage access to Farapó Bay
The overall amount of 3,000 million escudos is co-financed by the Santa Catarina do Fogo municipality, in partnership with the government, and the handover occurred about four months after the Santa Catarina municipality handed over the first tranche of the same amount, with a view to supporting the group in carrying out construction work on the access road and creating public jobs.
The construction of five kilometres of road, which links Fonte Aleixo Sul to the historic Farapó Baia, is the responsibility of the Amor Farapó group, which relies on volunteer work from the resident population, emigrants and friends of the group and the Baia itself, which has “sentimental value” for the people of Fonte Aleixo and Santa Catarina do Fogo.
“Farapó is a historic bay and refuge for many people in the famine of the 1940s in the 20th century,” said the group’s leader, António Avis, also known as Mestre Avis, and is one of the island’s largest fishing ports, with a water spring and the island’s second beach, but little known and visited due to the lack of a road.
