Africa-Press – Cape verde. The president of Brazil, Luís Inácio Lula da Silva, promised today, in Praia, to carry out a state visit to Cape Verde this year, as part of his policy of rapprochement with the African continent. Lula and José Maria Neves had a brief meeting at Praia International Airport, during a stopover on their return from Belgium.
“This (…) is a transition, because I intend to return as head of state, to have a deeper discussion on the relationship between Brazil and Cape Verde”, said Lula da Silva, in a joint statement with the President of the Republic, José Maria Neves.
Lula added that he intends to recover Brazil’s relationship with Africa, through the transfer of technology, in agriculture and industrialization, as well as the possibility of training and specialization in areas that Africa needs.
“The values of democracy once again reigned in Brazil (…) we do not want to return to the obscurantism of the authoritarian regime. Brazil needs democracy and the world needs democracy, so we will treat the African continent with care”, assured Lula da Silva.
Return of Brazil to the World
In turn, the President of the Republic, José Maria Neves, highlighted the proximity between the two countries and the contribution that Brazil has made to the development of Cape Verde.
However, he considered that more important than this is the “return of Brazil to the world”, given its relevance on the world stage.
“Brazil is a great country and its role in the world must match its size and we have seen that President Lula da Silva has brought this greatness to Brazil, which has behaved up to the challenges that the world is facing at this moment”, noted José Maria Neves.
José Maria Neves also said he hoped to receive a state visit from President Lula da Silva to “bring this new Brazil to Cape Verde and Africa”.
The President of the Federative Republic of Brazil made this stop for a few hours at Nelson Mandela Airport, in Praia, on his way back from Belgium, where he participated in the summit between countries of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) and the European Union.
