Government comments on recent PR statements and reaffirms the independence of the media

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Assistant Secretary of State to the Prime Minister, Lourenço Lopes, reacted today to the recent statements by the President of the Republic (PR) on the replacement of commentators on Public Television, stressing the independence of public media in the country.

“We are in a free, important country.

It has been said that in recent days there has been a withdrawal of commentators, for example, from analysis programs on Cabo Verde Television, but here, on this matter, the Government is very clear.

We defend the independence of the public media. RTC and the Inforpress news agency itself. This is non-negotiable for us. It is about the sovereignty of the journalist and his editorial autonomy,” he said.

Lourenço Lopes, even without naming names, was referring to recent statements by the President of the Republic (PR), José Maria Neves, who expressed indignation at the removal of the former President of the National Assembly and former Office of the Ombudsman, António Espírito Santo, as a commentator at Jornal de Domingo, for which he had been invited for a season, alongside former minister and former deputy of the African Independence Party, Felisberto Vieira.

Also in his statements, the Secretary of State reinforced the Government’s commitment to protect the independence of the media, including RTC and the Cape Verdean News Agency Inforpress, emphasising the sovereignty of journalists and their editorial autonomy.
