National coordinator of Palliative Care emphasizes challenges and myths surrounding the topic in the country

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The national coordinator for Palliative Care, Valeria Semedo, today drew attention to the need to expand access to palliative care in Cabo Verde, while recognising that it is difficult to estimate how many people need it throughout the country.

“It’s an estimate that’s very difficult to say how many people need because, in fact, palliative care is a relatively new service and therefore there are still many people who need it and don’t have access to it,” she said on the sidelines of the Webinar on “Palliative Care: the involvement of the patient and family in care”, organised by the National Health Directorate”

On a worldwide level, Valeria Semedo highlighted a “worrying” statistic, in that it is known that around 80 per cent of people in need do not have access to palliative care, so “in Cabo Verde it won’t be much different

Valéria Semedo drew on this global data to point out the magnitude of the challenge in ensuring that all those who need such care receive adequate assistance.
