Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Mayor of Porto Novo once again insisted on the need to build the airport on the island of Santo Antão and the second phase of the port of Porto Novo. In the solemn session of the Municipal Assembly commemorating the Day of the Municipality, held this Saturday, September 2nd, Aníbal Fonseca exhorted the Government to be increasingly proactive in the materialization of these projects.
“We are fully convinced of the need for both infrastructures. We therefore urge the Government to be increasingly proactive in the materialization of these projects”, advanced Aníbal Fonseca, acknowledging, however, that “firm steps” have already been taken in this direction.
As he informed, the Government has already secured “part of the funding” for the project to expand the port of Porto Novo, while the studies for the elaboration of the master plan for the airport of Santo Antão have already been concluded.
The construction of the airport and the second expansion phase of the port of Porto Novo also deserved the attention of the representatives of the political parties (MpD, PAICV and UCID) in the Municipal Assembly of Porto Novo on the occasion of the solemn commemorative session of the Day of the Municipality.
It should be noted that the solemn session of the Municipal Assembly commemorating the Day of the Municipality of Porto Novo and the 61 years of creation of this municipality, had the honorable presence of the President of the Republic, José Maria Neves.
Municipality Day and 61 years of the creation of the municipality
The solemn session of the Municipal Assembly commemorating the Day of the Municipality, a municipal holiday, was the high point of the celebrations to mark the date and the 61 years of life of the municipality, highlighting among the activities carried out, the thirty-fourth edition of the music festival from Curraletes beach, a show by the Juventude em Marcha theater company and a 17 kilometer “trail of the municipality” test.
The date is emblematic for Porto Novo people, who, in addition to Municipality Day, also celebrate the 61st anniversary of the creation of the county and the eighteenth anniversary of the elevation of Porto Novo to the rank of city.
The solemn session of the Municipal Assembly of Porto Novo was also marked by the attribution of honorary municipal insignias to personalities and entities for their contribution to the municipality.
The municipality of Porto Novo, the largest in Santo Antão, with an area of 557 kilometres, was created on September 2, 1962, through the Ministerial Legislative Diploma, signed by the then Minister of Overseas, Adriano Moreira.
From 1992 onwards, by deliberation of the Municipal Assembly of Porto Novo, the Day of the Municipality started to be celebrated on September 2nd, a decision based precisely on the fact that this municipality was created on that date.
