The two diplomats discussed various topics, such as common regional and global challenges, conflicts in Africa, climate change, combating transnational crime, peacekeeping efforts, maritime security, illegal fishing and other maritime threats in the Ocean. Atlantic.

Praise for Cape Verde’s position on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine

A note released by the United States Mission to the United Nations adds that the ambassador “congratulated Cape Verde for its progress in implementing the Sustainable Development Goals and praised the country “for its clear and consistent position opposing Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine ”.

The former Under-Secretary of State for African Affairs considered that due to the multiple crises and conflicts affecting some countries on the continent, “there is a need to strengthen democracies” and expressed her concern about the situation in Gabon, Niger, Burkina Faso and Chad.

Cape Verde highlights historic friendships with the USA

The head of Cape Verdean diplomacy highlighted, for his part, the historical ties of friendship that date back more than 200 years and the fruitful relations between Cape Verde and the United States.

“We emphasize the importance of this relationship for both nations, especially in terms of security, in the context of cooperation in the Atlantic, and we highlight the importance of cooperation in the field of security in the region and the need for close cooperation, especially to address maritime security and the fight against terrorism”, said Rui Figueiredo Soares, reiterating that his country “wants to continue to be a useful partner in the sub-region”.

The minister thanked the United States for supporting Cape Verde’s candidacy for membership in the United Nations Human Rights Council for the period 2025-2027.

In the country’s capital, Linda Thomas-Greenfield will also meet with former fellows of the YALY program, now called the Washington Mandela Fellowship, which, according to her, has contributed to the training of young African leaders.
