Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Movement for Democracy in Praia (MpD) was today against the salary increase at Banco de Cabo Verde (BCV). In a post shared on its Facebook page, signed by Alberto “Beta” Melo, president of the municipal commission for fans in the capital, the party reacted in this way to the news published in the newspaper A NAÇÃO no838 of 21 September, which reports on salary increases in around 17 and 18.4% for Governor and BCV administrators.
“The recent salary increase of the governor and administrators of Banco de Cabo Verde is highly questionable and deserves harsh criticism”, Beta begins, writing in a post shared on his page and on the MpD Praia page.
The Municipal Commission for fans in Praia is outraged by the aforementioned increases at the level of BCV managers, taking into account the economic situation experienced by the majority of families in the country.
“While the majority of Cape Verdean citizens are facing economic difficulties and struggling to survive, it is unacceptable that those in power receive such substantial salary increases”, they condemn.
Act for the benefit of the people
MpD Praia argues that it is “important to remember” that Banco de Cabo Verde is a public institution and that, therefore, it must act for the “benefit” of the people.
“The salaries of senior officials must be fair, reasonable and reflect the economic reality of the country. The decision to increase salaries by 17 percent (%) and 18.4% shows a troubling disconnect between the bank’s leaders and the population they are supposed to serve.”
Furthermore, they also argue that the fact that there are “additional invisibles” in the salary of the governor, Óscar Santos, increases his total remuneration “even further”, which, they claim, “is even more disturbing”.
“Transparency is fundamental in public institutions and it is necessary for citizens to have complete and detailed knowledge of the salaries and benefits of their representatives”, they appeal.
Affront to Cape Verdeans
This “excessive” salary increase, says the MpD in Praia, is an “affront” to Cape Verdeans who “are struggling to survive in a challenging economic scenario”.
“Instead of increasing the salaries of senior officials, there should be a focus on improving the country’s general economic conditions and assisting those most in need”, counters the MpD Municipal Commission in Praia.
They also remember that it is the “responsibility” of the leaders of Banco de Cabo Verde to “act with integrity and in line with the interests of the people”.
“This disproportionate salary increase undermines public trust in the institution and raises questions about the priorities and values of its leaders. There needs to be transparent accountability and an immediate review of this decision to correct this unfair pay gap.”
Therefore, they have no doubt that this salary increase at BCV “is an affront to Cape Verdeans”.
Ulisses says that the adjustment made is “normal”
Meanwhile, from New York, where he is on a mission, the Prime Minister, Ulisses Correia e Silva considered the “adjustment made” in relation to salaries at BCV to be “normal”, because, as he said, it makes sense for directors and advisors to earn more than the institution’s managers, who have “added” responsibilities.
It should be remembered that this reaction came after the news published in the weekly edition of the newspaper A NAÇÃO no838 of September 21st, which reports salary increases of around 17 and 18.4% for Governor and BCV administrators.
