” We have received many reports of children who have been on the streets for a long time, who have been abandoned by family members or have suffered physical and psychological abuse”, said, according to Lusa, Maria do Livramento Silva, president of the Cape Verdean Children’s Institute and the Adolescent (ICCA), one day after the opening of the new center, with capacity to accommodate 30 children.

” We want children to have a little more protection “, given the reports of neglect, abandonment, mistreatment and sexual abuse, he highlighted.

The space welcomes minors permanently, ” 24 hours a day and seven days a week “, with the goal that, within a year, they can return to family life.

” It is necessary to work with family members so that, after a certain period of time, they can be prepared to welcome their children “, he added.

In addition to children from the island of Sal, the center can also receive minors from other islands, as necessary.

According to Lusa, Cape Verde now has three children’s emergency centers managed by ICCA, the other two being in the city of Praia, housing 36 children, and on the island of São Vicente, with 27 minors.
