Parliament: Fidel de Pina praises athletes and sports journalists and points out the Government’s failures in the sector
“As everyone here knows, sport is life, it is health, it unites Cape Verdeans”, began Fidel de Pina, launching a series of congratulations to various Cape Verdean sports figures and teams, such as boxers” Nancy Moreira and David Pina, runner Liliana Lima, sailor Wesley Brito and other notable national and international presences, such as the national women’s football team and the Blue Tubarões, expressing recognition for everyone’s performance on the sports scene.
The parliamentarian expressed his gratitude to the Cape Verde Olympic Committee and congratulated the national basketball team for its unprecedented participation in the World Cup, also highlighting the work of coach Manuel Trovoada: “…for me he is, without a doubt, the man of the year.”
The deputy from the main opposition party also did not forget Fidel Mendonça, captain who recently resigned from the basketball team, for whom he expressed gratitude for his trajectory.
Another point of his speech was the appreciation of Cape Verdean sports journalists.
Fidel de Pina made a point of nominating professionals such as Marcos Fonseca, Victor Hugo Fortes, Benvindo Neves, Simão Rodrigues, Oldemiro Moreira, Moisés Évora and others, praising the “important role” they play in the sporting scene: “…who have made a great contribution to Cape Verdean sport”.

The end of his intervention was marked by a critical tone in relation to the Government’s stance towards national sport.
“The Government has failed sportspeople and athletes and proof of this is the indignation that the national basketball team, the players, have already come to the public more than once to complain”, alleged Pina.
The deputy concluded his speech by pointing out the need for greater resources and investments in sport, as well as a greater respect for the sector and its protagonists.
