Africa-Press – Cape verde. Cape Verde wants to have more than the current approximately 80 diplomats, to revitalize and have a more effective foreign policy, as part of a national strategy that it intends to validate this year, the Government announced today.

“We want to have a foreign policy that is revitalized (..) with greater effectiveness, especially our diplomatic actions”, considered, at a press conference in Praia, the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Miryan Vieira, to take stock of the meeting of the Council of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Government, he said, considering the geographical position of the country and its interests, wants to have “intelligent diplomacy” and that is attentive to the international situation, marked by several challenges, which have to do, above all, with climate, geostrategic and security issues. .

“And Cape Verde must have an intelligent positioning (…) have a more active role on the international scene”, insisted the government official, indicating that this is one of the lines of the National Foreign Policy Strategy, one of the points on the agenda, which the executive wants to validate this year.

To have this “more pragmatic” diplomacy, Miryan Vieira said that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will have to have more material and human resources, namely diplomats, pointing to more than the approximately 80 that currently exist.

“Given the current reality, there is a need to have more diplomats, more employees at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs”, he stated.

With the first National Foreign Policy Strategy, Cape Verde wants to have even more alliances and seek partnerships to enhance sustainable development and be a “useful and credible partner on the international scene”, according to the same government source.

The document, he continued, will also focus on mobilizing resources, through economic diplomacy, aimed at promoting the blue economy, as well as cultural diplomacy, conferences, sports, research and knowledge.

“It will be a strategy that will have lines of action and that we want to introduce, above all to encourage greater pragmatism and greater dynamics in the performance of our foreign policy and, therefore, also seek to have better effectiveness and impact, especially at national level and also at an international level”, highlighted Vieira.

The strategy also intends to pay attention to the Cape Verdean diaspora, as well as establish and deepen partnerships, both bilateral and multilateral.

Another item on the meeting’s agenda was the review of the Diplomatic Career Statute, in which the Government wants to introduce “some improvements”, promoting the culture of meritocracy and the valorization of internal skills.
