Africa-Press – Cape verde. ape Verde’s Finance Minister told Lusa today that Cape Verde was elected president of the Forum of Small Island States for the next two years, and promised to give priority to defending more concessional financing.
IMF/Meetings: Cape Verde assumes presidency of the Forum of small island states
” Small island states have particularities that must be taken into account, mainly with regard to access to concessional financing “, said Cape Verde’s deputy prime minister, Olavo Correia, in an interview with Lusa on the sidelines of the Monetary Fund’s Annual Meetings International and the World Bank, which end today in Marrakesh.
“For Cape Verde, being president of the Forum is a privilege because it gives space to increase notoriety as a country, defend joint issues such as access to concessional financing because small States are the most impacted, they are the ones that will later emerge from the recession, are the most vulnerable to climate change and are not net contributors, but end up paying the bill for the changes “, said the government official.
The forum, which Cape Verde will preside over the next two years, represents more than 50 small developing States that are also archipelagos, is ” an opportunity to have a single voice in the IMF, the World Bank, the United Nations, and in all the global stages “, stressed Olavo Correia, highlighting that the presidency also brings added responsibility.
“It is an added responsibility, but it is also an opportunity to promote Cape Verde as a small island state, and we will design an agenda, with goals, objectives and actions to guarantee results from this forum and that will be even more useful from now on for the forward”, concluded the government official quoted by Lusa.
