Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Government of Cape Verde wants to develop a certificate of origin for fishing products, to give more visibility to the sector and promote it, in particular, within the tourist market, according to a request for proposals for a dedicated consultancy.
Cape Verde prepares certificate of origin for fishing products
The work involves “ evaluating opportunities and developing a certification and labeling scheme of origin and sustainability for relevant fishing and aquaculture products in Cape Verde ”, reads the announcement published on the Ministry of Finance portal, consulted today by Lusa.
The objective is to “ promote the consumption of local fishing and aquaculture products, especially for the tourist market ”.
The initiative is part of the Resilient Tourism and Blue Economy Development Project (RTBED), supported by the World Bank as part of the economic recovery post-covid-19 pandemic, and which also foresees investments in coastal infrastructure (such as ports) and training.
In addition to identifying which species may be certified, the work now underway must indicate which sustainability criteria are mandatory, as well as compliance with tracking rules, that is, identifying where each portion sold came from.
According to the same source, the results of the consultancy should be ready within five months.
“ The successive governments of Cape Verde and other national institutions, with the support of international partners, have adopted the principle that the sustainable development of fisheries in Cape Verde must promote quality rather than focusing exclusively on increasing catches”, he indicates the presentation document.
It is in this context that the possibility of developing a certificate of origin arises.
“ Food certification and labeling is gaining more and more importance, both for the benefit of consumers ”, who are more informed about processing, “ and producers ”, who value the product and may have more buyers, concludes the aforementioned source cited by Lusa.
