Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Unidos do Norte football team from the town of São Jorge, north of the municipality of São Filipe, will not participate in the regional competitions in the 2023/24 season due to organizational problems.
Football/Fogo: Unidos do Norte absent from regional competitions in the 2023/24 season. The president of the management committee created two years ago to organize the team, Luís Rodrigues, has resigned and so far no one has offered to take over the committee and, consequently, organize the team to participate in the regional competitions.
“We are not going to enter the regional football championship”, said Luís Rodrigues to Inforpress, remembering that the status of Unidos do Norte was drawn up by a group from Ponta Verde and that, faced with some suspicions and demands from people who never contributed or did anything to support the team the president of the committee, in addition to resigning, has already returned the status to the group which presupposes that neither this season nor the next season, the town of São Jorge will have a team in the regional football competitions.
Luís Rodrigues also said that a committee was created to manage the team and had people from different parts of the north, noting that a page was then created to facilitate the mobilization of resources and recruited some people to open accounts with banking institutions.
“Unidos do Norte was me (Luís Rodrigues) and Chalana, who represented the team in the United States of America and mobilized emigrants from the north who covered the expenses”, said Luís Rodrigues, indicating that for each trip the team made from São Jorge São Lourenço, the venue for games and training, spent around three thousand escudos.
The purpose of creating the management committee was to organize better because one person alone could not handle all the things, but at the end of the first season in the first division a group of people emerged who, according to Luís Rodrigues, “never gave anything to the team to raise a series of suspicions and demanding accountability, even knowing that the team does not have any partner” he ended up leaving the committee.
“It was me, Chalana and some emigrants in the United States who supported the team, plus the 100,000 escudos that the São Filipe city council made available. They started with a lot of demands and confusion, I made the position available for other people to take over the commission, but no one has yet appeared and Chalana, who is the team’s right-hand man, has also expressed that he will not support”, said Luís Rodrigues, lamented the team’s short trajectory, just two years, believing that it is unlikely that São Jorge will have a team in regional competitions in the coming seasons.
The representative in the United States had mobilized three new pieces of equipment, training equipment, travel uniform, backpacks, more than 60 pairs of boots, balls and others, but their shipment was cancelled.
The management committee is analyzing the possibility of donating equipment to the formation of Unidos do Norte, in Santiago Sul, because it has inscriptions on the shirts in the name of Unidos do Norte and, therefore, this donation is being considered.
Unidos do Norte participated for the first time in the regional football competitions in the 2021/22 season and in the year of its debut it became regional champion, thus giving it the possibility of moving up to the first level where it participated in the 2022/23 season in the regional championship of the first level having ranked in fifth place in the universe of ten teams.
The draw for the first-tier regional football championship was held last September and the Fogo Regional Football Association (ARFF) included Unidos do Norte in the draw and in case of participation, the competition would open against Juventus de Curral Grande , which rose to the top flight this season.
