Parliament: Government continues to focus on education reform and improving teachers’ quality of life – MpD

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The MpD today highlighted the commitment and effort of teachers in building a better Cape Verde, ensuring that the Government is focused on reforming education and improving the quality of the education system and teachers’ lives.

The guarantee of the Government’s commitment was given by the leader of the parliamentary bench of the Movement for Democracy (MpD), Paulo Veiga, during his party’s political declaration, having started his intervention by taking stock of the measures adopted by the Government in the Budget of State of 2023.

“It was clear and evident that the 2023 Budget prioritized continuing to manage contingencies and emergencies to protect people and companies, relaunch the economy and prepare the country for the future. That is why the 2023 budget prioritized investment in the Social State”, he highlighted.

According to the deputy, 43.5% of the total budget is applied to programs aimed at developing human capital, social inclusion, reducing inequalities, eradicating extreme poverty and gender equality.

He recalled that the national minimum wage increased from 13 thousand to 14 thousand and the salaries of the public administration and INPS pensioners were updated between 1 and 3.5%, around 250 thousand contos were applied to regularize the process of evolution in careers of employees from various services and more than 27 professional careers have been updated.

For the leader of the MpD parliamentary bench, the social inclusion income, the productive inclusion program and the care system continued to benefit poorer and more vulnerable families and people, particularly benefiting women, children and the elderly.

“It is a budget that truly invested in people’s dignity, invested in young people, reinforced investment in professional training and professional retraining, in professional internships and in young entrepreneurship”, he considered, highlighting that the 2023 State Budget allowed to consolidate the trajectory of growth that began in 2016 and was only interrupted in 2020 due to the pandemic.

He stated that after 15 years of stagnation, the country has experienced the last seven years of growth which, in his opinion, will allow the disputes of the different classes to be resolved with the dignity they deserve.

In this sense, he highlighted the engagement, commitment and effort in favor of the noble cause of teaching and educating in the construction of a better society, highlighting that the MpD Government has done a lot to increasingly provide the teaching class with more and better means to carry out its function.

“We all remain focused on always working to improve the quality of life of all teachers. As an example, the tripartite protocol signed between the Ministry of Education, the FH and the Ministry of Infrastructure, aimed at facilitating favorable conditions for teachers to have their own home, placing 1,200 homes for this purpose on the islands of Santiago, Maio, Boa Vista, Sal and São Vicente”, he declared.

According to Paulo Veiga, thousands of teachers benefited from measures to resolve public issues in 2021, ensuring that the schedule for the definitive resolution of all issues will be published by the end of this year.

From 2016 to 2021, he specified, the Government resolved pending issues that benefited more than 7,000 teachers, resulting in a budget increase of more than 730,000 contos, adding that in 2021 it resolved pending issues related to the definitive appointment of teachers benefiting 971 teachers, granting subsidies for non-reduction of workload benefiting 219 teachers, reduction of teaching load benefiting 400 teachers and requalification and progression benefiting 119 teachers.

“There are good prospects for 2024. The Government has already announced that it will begin dialogue with teachers with a view to reviewing the Teaching Career Statute, within which the updating of the teachers’ remuneration table will also be addressed. We will continue to focus on education reform to provide quality education”, he said.
