Africa-Press – Cape verde. Sokols 2017 and the Movement for the Development of São Vicente (MDSV) say they are against the use of tar for asphalting streets and the road network, but, alternatively, in favor of using our stones to pave roads and streets. They justify this understanding by considering this product (tar) to be polluting, in addition to representing “a large outflow of currency” from Cape Verde.

Debate/Paving of streets and roads: Sokols and MDSV say they are against the use of asphalt “because it is polluting and represents a large outflow of currency” from the country
This statement by the two civil society organizations in São Vicente came in reaction to the announcement by the Mayor of Praia, Francisco Carvalho, for the asphalting of several streets in the Cidadela.

« The objective is to provoke debate around the use of asphalt in paving streets and roads when we have the stone for this purpose. Such a procedure appears to be an act of mismanagement of the country’s resources due to the high losses and inconveniences that this entails “, reads a note sent to Asemanaonline.

The same source states that imports of tar and other materials for asphalt begin to represent a considerable outflow of foreign exchange from the country. « Maintaining paved roads and streets is expensive. Asphalt is polluting and causes air temperatures to rise considerably. A well-made sidewalk lasts a lifetime and the floor is as comfortable as asphalt ,” he explains.

Sokols 2017 and MDSV remind us that over thirty years ago, asphalt was chosen. «If it weren’t for this wrong decision, the country would already have a developed stone industry, employing hundreds of workers. On the contrary, we went backwards in the Know – how we had in this area of knowledge ».

As they consider that such a policy « does not favor the development of Cape Verde, does not promote the fight against poverty or reduce extreme poverty», they argue «that a debate is necessary on this issue of the use of alactaran in paving roads and streets» .

The two associations pointed out, on the other hand, that they read in the press that Paris/France will remove 40% of the asphalt because of the urban heat it produces. Therefore, they argue that Cape Verde has alternatives at hand, which is paving the streets and roads with stone, which is non-polluting and does not heat the environment, in addition to being a national product, the application of which requires the use of a lot of labor. and it lasts an eternity.
