Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Regional Political Commission (CPR) of the African Independence Party of Cape Verde (PAICV, opposition), in Santiago Norte, today asked Cape Verdeans to give a “red card” to the MpD (in power) in the next elections.
At a press conference in Assomada, the president of the CPR of Santiago Norte, Carla Carvalho, indicated that the PAICV advisors from the northern region of the island were meeting to analyze the State Budget for the economic year 2024 (OE’2024), and found that the Government “ does not have a solution for Cape Verdeans ”, more specifically for the Santiago Norte region.
“We ask Cape Verdeans to give the MpD a red card next year, being the year of [local] elections ”, he requested, justifying that Cape Verdeans and the people of Santiago Norte “ do not just live in time of elections ”, but yes, they live every year, and that people need jobs to support their families and raise their children.
“ When we analyzed the projects, we saw that since 2016 the big promises made for the region have not been fulfilled, and there are two more budgets left to close the 2021/2026 legislature and there is still nothing concrete that leads to the creation of jobs for families in order to have an income and a life with dignity ”, revealed this leader, referring to Santiago Norte.
According to Carla Carvalho, the promises made in the fishing sector, namely, trawlers for the region, docks in Ribeira da Barca, a commercial port for Santa Cruz and a marina port in Tarrafal “have not yet come to fruition and are not even reflected in the OE’2024 ”.
Likewise, he highlighted that when analyzing the agriculture sector, which is the primary sector and the basis of the region, there are no “ large investments ”, highlighting that on the issue of water mobilization the Government had committed to investing in water desalination, but that until then “ nothing concrete has been done ”, reinforcing that “ there is nothing that allows farmers and businesspeople in the area to have income and thus support the development of the region ”.
“ It is a Government that has failed the region and when we look at social and income policies, we see that the MpD Government is betting on election years to bring some measures that for the PAICV are vote-buying measures, or to try to condition people’s freedom and conscience” , he accused, exemplifying the payment of water and electricity bills and offering people one thousand or five thousand escudos a month.
Carla Carvalho also considered that the PAICV CPR in the region is “ sad and thoughtful”, as it is “a Government that was chosen by Cape Verdeans, but which is ignoring and is completely silent when it has to do with policies that lead to fact to development ”.
As for the region itself, he accuses the Government of continuing to leave it “ forgotten ” and with people who remain “ unresolved ”.
“ A region made up of six municipalities, and at the moment the MpD is a local government in four, but not even for its municipalities there is nothing that leads to development, not to mention the municipalities that are governed locally by the PAICV, and that the Government has been trying to block the work of the local authority, mainly in Tarrafal de Santiago ”, he concluded.
