Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Regional Political Commission (CPR) of the African Independence Party of Cape Verde (PAICV, opposition), in Santiago Norte, today asked the Government and local authorities to help the population of Figueira das Naus.
At a press conference in Figueira das Naus, the president of the CPR of Santiago Norte, Carla Carvalho, said, according to Inforpress, that this week they were visiting Santa Catarina de Santiago, mainly in the northernmost area of the municipality, taking into account account of the last fire that occurred at the site in April.
And as part of this visit, he informed that today they met with the population of Figueira das Naus, having also visited the town of Serra Malagueta, where, eight months after the fire, “nothing has changed ” .
The largest opposition party considers that the families affected by the fire have not yet received any type of support, and even in terms of Civil Protection there has been no investment from the Government itself.
According to the same source, in addition to families not having received their compensation, as promised by the Government, Carla Carvalho highlighted that many are questioning and complaining why their names are not on the list of beneficiaries, since they were also affected by the fire.
In this matter, the CPR has committed that it will request this list from the Government, but also the diagnosis that was made.
“ Soon after the fire situation, all local and central structures arrived at the scene, but then everyone forgot and the affected people waited for public institutions to act ”, he denounced, recalling that both the Government and the municipal council were elected to to be close to people and to take care of them.
In particular, in the community of Figueira das Naus, he says that “ the presence of neither the Government nor the Municipal Council of Santa Catarina de Santiago is felt ”, reinforcing that at the Government level, the population reported that the only work that was carried out it was the road, and since then no further infrastructure has been built.
Despite these issues, he said that people are asking for work and support for their families, especially with school transport, emphasizing that parents face several difficulties in sending their children to school.
Another aspect highlighted that is outraging the community, continues Infrpress, is the collapse of part of the wall of the local cemetery and until then the local authority was not there to find out about the situation, much less start the works.
The leader informed that in addition to the CPR, the PAICV national deputy for the Santiago Norte circle, Armindo Freitas, was also present on these visits, and that even though he denounced this situation to the Social Communication, he will also take these issues to Parliament, arguing that it is necessary that the authorities are present in the community and respond more quickly, concludes this newspaper’s source.
