Africa-Press – Cape verde. The president of the National Teachers’ Union (Sindep) announced today, in Praia, a general strike starting this Wednesday, 22nd, and continuing on November 23rd, demanding above all a salary increase for all teachers. Jorge Cardoso threatens a new national strike in December if the government of Ulisses Correia e Silva does not resolve all the class’s demands.
According to Inforpress, Cardoso made this announcement at a press conference, where he stated that the strike is inevitable on all Cape Verde islands, as he considers that the Government is “ deceiving and deceiving the teaching class ” with promises and maneuvers.
The leader of Sindep highlights that the teachers’ unions met with the Ministers of Education, the Deputy Prime Minister and the Minister of Public Administration to seek consensus to avoid this strike again.
But he stressed that during the negotiations with the Government, consensus remained on the issue of the table for the new salary scale whose proposal from the unions is 107,471$00 and the salary increase in line with inflation for all teachers.
“ The strike will have to happen because the Government is trying to deceive the teaching class, deceive the unions, which is why we want to alert the entire teaching class, all teachers to be engaged in this fight because, in fact, the Government wants to deceive the teachers , deceiving the unions and teachers, because nothing is being resolved” , maintained Jorge Cardoso, quoted by Inforpress.
He appealed to all teachers, from Santo Antão to Brava, to remain united, strong and cohesive to win this fight, ensuring that Sindep, as a trade union organization representing the class, is willing to go to the extreme, warning the Government that Now is the time to act and comply.
“ Just yesterday I was with the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, we don’t want blackmail, promises, now is the time to do and not what we are going to do, and the teaching class is suffering more than anyone else. Since 2016, the teaching class has not seen even a penny in their salary and it is not acceptable for the Government to have the courage to tell teachers that they do not deserve a special status”, highlighted Jorge Cardoso .
Still in relation to the list of requalifications for the number of teachers released by the Government this Monday, the union leader said that this is a matter of maneuvers, as the requalification for the years 2020, 2021 and 2022 needs to be done all at once.
New general strike for December
Counting on more than 80% of teachers joining the strike, the president of Sindep also announced an upcoming strike for December, threatening the total interruption of education in the country.
“Because if the Government does not back down and respect the teachers we will in fact come to a standstill, we are determined to do so, we are fed up with talk, the teachers want their problems resolved, especially salary adjustments for now”, guaranteed Jorge Cardoso, quoted by our source .
