Africa-Press – Cape verde. This Monday, Portugal donated another 60,000 doses of vaccines against Covid-19 to Cape Verde, totaling 138,000 doses delivered to that African country since it began vaccination in March 2021.

The symbolic delivery was made by the Portuguese ambassador to Cape Verde, Paulo Lourenço, to the Cape Verdean Minister of Health, Filomena Gonçalves, under the European Civil Protection Mechanism, managed by the European Commission.

According to the Portuguese diplomat, of the 60,000 doses of Pfizer vaccines, a third (20,000) are pediatric, intended for the 12 to 17 year old age group, in which Cape Verde already had “limited reserves”.

“This donation gives shape to Portugal’s close coordination and collaboration with the National Health Directorate (DNS) of Cape Verde”, emphasized Paulo Lourenço.

The Cape Verdean Minister of Health, Filomena Gonçalves, thanked Portugal for Portugal’s “generous contribution”, which is in line with the new global plan of the World Health Organization (WHO) for the management of covid-19 until 2025, aimed at guiding countries to transition, in their strategy to deal with the disease, from an emergency phase to a management phase.

“This is a change that reflects the need for more comprehensive, sustainable and long-term approaches to dealing with the ongoing challenges posed by the Covid-19 virus”, highlighted the minister.
