Africa-Press – Cape verde. Cardinal Dom Arlindo Furtado highlighted this Thursday, in the city of Praia, the “very important role” of Catholic Christian businesspeople in meeting the needs of today’s society.
The bishop of Santiago spoke at the opening of the forum on “The role of Christian businesspeople in sustainable development”, promoted by the Association of Catholic Managers, Businesspeople and Professionals of Cape Verde (AGEPC-CV) and chaired by the President of the Republic, in office, Austelino Belt.
“Christian entrepreneurs play a very important role in today’s society, in which they feel the unavoidable need to meet to see how to develop business, how to apply new techniques, how to follow market developments, how to discover new opportunities, and how to increase production. of riches”, highlighted Arlindo Furtado.
Thus, the cardinal reinforced the importance of Catholic businesspeople getting together to discuss ways of improving the production of wealth, the means of production, its distribution and meeting the needs of today’s society, underlining that Catholic businesspeople are enlightened in a particular way by faith. .
“They count on Jesus in their lives, and with Jesus they are better equipped to face the challenges, when Jesus said to the apostles: “give you the same to eat as the crowd”, they had practically nothing, but they had the ability and they had Jesus , and Jesus associated them with the distribution of bread that multiplied, Jesus plus businesspeople perform miracles of not allowing people to go hungry, this is the specific thing about the Christian businessman”, concluded the prelate of Santiago.
Therefore, he encouraged Christian businesspeople to be “more bold and persevering”, highlighting that they have the capacity to achieve their goals, as they are not alone.
In turn, the acting President of the Republic, Austelino Correia, highlighted that discussing the role of Christian businesspeople in sustainable development inevitably refers to the United Nations 2030 Agenda.
This implies, he continued, evaluating the degree of fulfillment of the objectives that aim to reflect on the situation of poverty, hunger, access to healthcare, education, drinking water, sanitation, decent work and the distribution of wealth .
“It challenges us to take a look at inequalities, peace and justice and the performance of institutions, and what is behind the number and prevailing situations and how to act to change the course of the situation for the better in favor of the good -being common”, he concluded.
For Austelino Correia, despite the Government’s active policies in boosting the financial and capital markets, in attracting more investments, the private business sector continues to be an important actor in promoting the country’s economic development and in the succession of managers, entrepreneurs and teachers.
Therefore, he emphasized, Catholic professionals have the “special role” of example, dissemination and awareness among entrepreneurs to carry out business activity “with ethics, respect for the dignity of the human person and social responsibility”, in favor of achieving the common good .
For her part, the president of the Association of Catholic Managers, Entrepreneurs and Professionals of Cape Verde AGEPCV, Milucí Santos, highlighted that the role of Catholic Christian businesspeople is to bring the social doctrine of the Church to businesspeople, the social thought of the Church, dignity of the person humanity and solidarity within companies.
“We are talking about helping those closest to us, working with those closest to us and within companies and for the community, for the State and for the Country”, highlighted Milucí Santos, aware that Cape Verdean companies are supportive, lead to doctrine and support the most vulnerable people, however, he confirmed that there is a need to work harder to achieve this end.
