ICIEG wants the new generation to have a “better understanding” of gender stereotypes in Cape Verde

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The president of ICIEG today considered it important that the new generation has a “better understanding” of gender stereotypes, as changing behaviors has “positive impacts” in promoting gender equality in the country’s development.

The president of the Cape Verdean Institute for Gender Equality and Equity (ICIEG), Marisa Carvalho, made these considerations to the press, on the sidelines of the opening ceremony of the second edition of the National Gender Forum, with the motto “Generation Equality”, which started this Friday, lasting until this Saturday, the 25th, in the City of Praia.

“We intend to open the 16 days of activism, which begin tomorrow [Saturday, 25], but we bring forward the forum, so that, really for 16 days, we can flood the country with an orange wave, as is the intention of the United Nations, to for two days to reflect on the challenges that unfortunately we still face, not only at a global level, but also at the level of Cape Verde, the issues regarding GBV, and new challenges that we are facing”, he explained.

According to the same source, the event aims to mobilize collective and individual actors and entities to reflect on the impact of gender equality on the country’s development and to strengthen the collective commitment to promoting gender equality and equity in all spheres of society. -verdiana.

“The equality generation is that generation that we have data on that is more daring, so to speak, more receptive to changing behavior. Gender issues, unfortunately, have to do with the educational burden we receive and we know that the older we get, the more difficult it is to change an already acquired behavior,” he said.

He also highlighted that the generation of equality is that generation that is aware of the challenges that the country faces that it no longer tolerates and that does not normalize situations of violence and it is with them that ICIEG wants to continue to focus its work.

“We work a lot with secondary schools, but also with kindergarten teachers, since kindergarten, so that we can somehow, I’m not saying amend, but direct some behaviors that are acquired within the family context”, he summarized.

This, he continued, so that what gender and what the study is, what gender stereotypes are, they can really have a “better understanding” and so that they, when they are educators, can educate this generation. for equality.

He highlighted, on the other hand, that ICIEG has been working with partners, particularly secondary schools, to address this new phenomenon, still recent in Cape Verde, which is related to cyberbullying, among other issues.

He also said that ICIEG carried out awareness-raising activities throughout the year in secondary schools on the different islands of the country and in partnership with the National Data Protection Commission, warning about this crime and that it is punishable by law.

“People often have the perception that they are covered by anonymity or using false profiles that cannot be identified, but are easily identified, because we also know that acting together with the Judiciary Police is easily detectable and they have also acted in a very active way in this sense”, he stressed, warning parents and guardians to be aware of this new reality, of how new technologies and social networks are being used violently.
