Two of the three suspects of having shot and killed a National Police (PN) officer in retirement, in Cape Verde, were sentenced to 28 years in prison, according to the sentence read today in the Praia Court.Of the three suspects, all residents of Achada Grande Trás and who had been in preventive detention since March, two were convicted, while a third was acquitted, reveals Lusa.
The two main people involved were sentenced to 28 years in prison each, in legal terms, 22 years for the murder of the agent, five for illegal possession of a weapon and one for the attempted murder of a witness.
The defendants were also ordered to pay compensation to the victim’s family, in an amount to be defined by the Praia District Court.
Speaking to Lusa, defense lawyer, David Nunes, said that, depending on the type of crime, it is a “fair penalty”, and therefore the sentence should not be appealed.
The three suspects, aged between 28 and 35, were accused of committing, in co-authorship, a crime of aggravated homicide, using a firearm, harm to physical integrity and possession of weapons.
The crime occurred on December 16, 2020 in the town of São Tomé, next to the old Praia airport, with the victim being a National Police officer who had retired shortly before.
As the Cape Verdean press wrote at the time, the police officer was murdered following a robbery, according to Lusa.
