Sal Island: Health delegate warns of the danger of “bait” placed on the streets to poison dogs and cats

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Sal Health delegate warned this Monday, 8th, of the danger posed by the so-called “bait” that are being placed on the streets to poison dogs and cats.

osé Rui Moreira issued this warning after another wave of animal poisonings on public roads across the island of Sal came to light, angering people and non-governmental animal protection organizations on the island.

According to the delegate, in addition to being inhumane, this is a very dangerous method that can be used by anyone, especially children who are often on the street playing.

“The poisoning method is always dangerous, because in addition to being inhumane, it is an inappropriate way of sacrificing animals and is dangerous because the poison that is being used is normally placed in food that children or people without discernment can touch or ingest”, explained.

According to the same source, the dose they must be administering could kill other animals or even poisoned animals may be able to get home and take the poison with them.

“Therefore, any attitude towards animals for reasons of combating the increase in the canine or feline population must be carried out by competent authorities, but using appropriate methods to do so”.

José Rui Moreira warned and appealed to people to keep their animals in suitable places, to avoid such situations but also to avoid dog attacks on people, which have been constant and worrying on the island.

“We have had many regrettable attacks by dogs on tourists and other people who arrive in a critical condition because of dogs running loose on the streets, mainly in Santa Maria, but in addition to the danger of attacks they also pose other problems for public health”, he concluded.

The Municipal Council of Sal has once again spoken out about the act that it considers “very delicate”, “barbaric” and unnecessary as the city council has been working to combat the increase in the dog population on the island through legal means and which also respects the animal rights.

“The city council adopted an ethical canine management policy and therefore signed in 2020 the letter of alliance with the Civil Movement for Responsible Communities (MCCR), together with other municipalities in the country, in which the city council adopts canine management based solely in sterilization and responsible adoption”, highlighted the technician in the area, engineer Carlos Xavier.

“From the beginning, the city council took a stand against this barbaric act and will never adopt this unsustainable method, because animal slaughter must be done technically through euthanasia, when extremely necessary, and by a veterinary professional trained to do so”, explained Xavier .

Since last August, non-governmental animal protection organizations on the island of Sal have been reporting cases of animal poisoning on public roads, with more than fifty dead animals.

It should be noted that the poisoning of animals constitutes a crime, as established by the Penal Code in Article 372 – B, which deals with the mistreatment of companion animals. This act is punishable by up to two years in prison or a fine, up to 240 days.”

  1. Hi there what statistics do you have to prove the large number of attacks on tourists we only heard of very few which of course shouldn’t happen and in at least one of these cases a dog barked at someone. The vast majority of tourists I know of love these dogs and love to see them. Can I ask why the camera didn’t take advantage of when the brigitte bardot foundation visited the island to do the mass neutering . After the failure of that they would not carry on the project on the other islands as they planned to

  2. i’ve been so many times to Santa Maria for my holidays from the UK and I’ve never been attacked by a dog. I’ve only ever got loved by a dog. They are loving animals and wouldn’t hurt a fly x

  3. What a load of tosh, the dogs are friendly and just desperate to be loved and cared for. What hope do they have when such a stupid comment is made by someone who should know better. You should be ashamed of yourself. It’s totally barbaric the way these animals are being slaughtered. Shame on you! Shame on your poor excuses and reasoning for it. Educate people on care of these animals, neutering etc. I’m so embarrassed for all the good native people who actually realise what they mean to tourists.

  4. I visit cape verde for the dogs but now that you are poisoning the dogs I see no point in coming to cape verde anymore.

I will pass this on to all the people in Sweden and tell them how horrible people are in Cap Verde!! you will lose many tourists if you don’t stop this!!

  5. Absolutely rubbish reply!!
Dogs attacking let’s out a poll up asking tourists?
You need to be looking into these poisonings before a child dies!! That will be serious blood on your hands!!

  6. Where is the statistics about these many attacks on tourists? All the dogs I met were so lovely and one of the reasons my holiday turned out brillant. If the dogs are such a big problem, why didnt the government paticipate in the neutering campaign?

  7. I have been to the island lots of times and have never seen dogs attacking tourists – or anybody else for that matter.
All they want is a bit of love and attention – and some food.
Do the Government realise that they are the ones putting tourists off visiting the island because they do not like what is happening with the animals. That and the health care system are 2 of the reasons we have stopped going to Sal.
Read the posts, people keep saying they will never go to Sal again.

  8. Mr.Health Delegate ,
You have misrepresented the dogs of this island , never have I met an aggressive dog in the years I have been going there . All of the dogs I have met are friendly and looking for food and love . Your brazen words about supposed „attacks“ , without any evidence of this , and your in action on the murder of these harmless creatures , speaks volumes to us tourists . Many are speaking of a total boycott of the islands until the poisioning stops and I will support those actions . We love Cabo Verde , and come there every year , but we won’t come to a place that treats animals this way , and allows them to be murdered .

  9. Stop being so cruel to animals they have feelings to I’ve never been attacked by a dog all we get loved that’s why we come to sal because of the animals

  10. I do not believe that there are a lot of accidents due to the dogs. The government is poisoning them, this is cruel! Neutering is the correct way. Respect the dogs and cats, just like you respect humans. The way the government is handling now, just pushes tourists away! No tourists, no work, no money
