President of the National Assembly says that implementing democracy is “the greatest achievement” of Cape Verdeans

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The president of the National Assembly considered today that, “allied to National Independence”, the implementation of democracy and the democratic Rule of Law is the greatest achievement of Cape Verdeans since the discovery of Cape Verde. In his speech at the solemn session marking the 33rd anniversary of the first pluralist elections in Cape Verde, Austelino Correia considered that the 13th of January marked a “fundamental stage” in Cape Verde’s journey and in the construction of its history.

“These were decisive steps for the country to become a sovereign, unitary and democratic Republic, which guarantees respect for the dignity of the human person and recognizes the inalienability of human rights as the foundation of the entire human community”, he noted.

Austelino Correia explained that the correlation between the dignity of the human person and democracy would lead to a global call for the Cape Verdean nation to participate in the important march in favor of democracy and freedom, which took place on January 13, 1991.

“It is necessary to look at what happened in Cape Verde from an endogenous perspective, read the facts and trends, upstream and downstream of the 13th of January, but also what contributed to the inclusion of our country in an international movement of universalization and consecration of rights human rights and the dignity of the human person”, he noted.

During his speech, the president of the National Assembly spoke about Cape Verde’s gains in these 33 years of freedom and democracy, with emphasis on the education sector, and recalled that the country’s democratic path has been “systematically well evaluated” by international organizations, whose reputation is worthy of trust from entities and countries of “unquestionable institutional solidity”.

However, he warned that the resistance of democratic systems depends on the ability of Cape Verdeans to combat many factors that contribute to their erosion, referring to the wars in Ukraine, the Middle East, the cyclical coups d’état and the armed conflicts that have occurred in several African countries.

“Therefore, Cape Verde must continue to invest in a democracy with strong relationships and interinstitutional cooperation, as a cornerstone for political stability. We must all work so that each State institution is strong and effective”, pointed out Austelino Correia.

January 13th is the date on which, for the first time, in 1991, Cape Verdeans exercised their right to vote in the first multi-party elections, after 15 years under a single-party regime.

The first multi-party elections in the archipelago were won by the MpD, the party that returned to power in 2016, after 15 years in opposition and with which the date is most associated. The Week with Inforpress
