New director of the PJ promises a “more scientific” institution and defines combating drug trafficking as the “main challenge”

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The new director of the Judiciary Police (PJ), Manuel Livramento da Lomba, promised today, in the City of Praia, a “more scientific” institution and pointed to the fight against drug trafficking as the “main challenge”.The intention was expressed this morning in his inauguration speech, in which he also guaranteed “better communication” between the PJ and the National Police (PN), as well as “strong coordination” with the Public Ministry, as holder of the action criminal.

Therefore, he said it is “fundamental” to have concerted action between institutions to combat crime “which is ravaging the country” and prevent threats from finding spaces for penetration.

“Crime, such as drug trafficking, economic and financial crimes, money laundering, corruption, and fraud, in its most varied forms and modalities, has a common denominator which is greed, and the State must give a clear signal that the crime it’s not worth it”, observed Manuel Livramento da Lomba, arguing that urban crimes, “which have caused insecurity in the country”, have drug trafficking and consumption at their epicenter.

According to the new director of the PJ, the institution cannot be satisfied with just arrests and seizures of drugs in ports and airports and neglecting trafficking and consumption, which, as he pointed out, have been the causes of several other crimes.

“In this regard, special attention will be given, with a relentless fight, returning peace, security and tranquility to all Cape Verdeans, thus contributing to better justice”, guaranteed the person in charge, ensuring equal care for computer crimes.

“Count on a PJ that stops being out of its comfort zone to be more active, more proactive, competent, fast, efficient and above all scientific”, said Manuel Livramento da Lomba, pointing out the need for new equipment, new facilities and training of human resources.

In turn, the Minister of Justice, Joana Rosa, who presided over the inauguration ceremony, said that from this new leadership of the PJ she expects “better organization and criminal investigation”, but, “above all”, the fight against drug trafficking and to related crimes.

In this sense, he argued that the PJ, as a criminal prevention and investigation body, plays a “fundamental role” and irreplaceable in the judicial sector, “standing as an auxiliary body in the administration of Justice”.

Therefore, he pointed out the Government’s ambition to promote preventive, rapid and effective justice, and consequently continue to provide an environment favorable to the country’s development and the well-being of Cape Verdeans.

According to the governor, this aim will not be achieved if the PJ does not reveal high levels of organization, motivation and technical and scientific preparation.

Manuel António Livramento, former first-class public prosecutor in the Public Prosecutor’s Office, replaced Ivanilda Mascarenhas, who left office on November 20th, a few days after completing a year in office, being based, as he explained, incompatibility with the Minister of Justice.
