Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Political Commission of the Movement for Democracy (MpD), power in the Porto Novo region, challenged this Tuesday, the local leader of the PAICV (opposition) to present evidence of the accusations about “serious signs of corruption” in the city of Porto Novo. novenese.
In a press conference on January 12, the first secretary of PAICV, Jairson Tavares, said he had in his possession “documents” that prove the existence of “serious signs of corruption” in the Porto Novo City Council, promising to present them “in the right time” to “show what the real management” of the city team has been.
“In the case of serious accusations, all residents must be clarified, therefore, we challenge you to present such proof documents, which, after proving their authenticity and veracity, should be forwarded to the competent authorities for investigation and due effects. ”, declared the president of the MpD Regional Political Commission, Carlita Santos, in a note sent to Inforpress.
“As a member of the Municipal Assembly of Porto Novo, a body that has the responsibility and duty to approve municipal management instruments, as well as to assess the municipal management accounts, whose approval is the responsibility of the Court of Auditors, and monitor the performance of the city council, we have not seen any evidence of corruption on the part of the current city council team”, he said.
Therefore, “until the opposite is proven, that is, until such documents are presented and evaluated by competent bodies”, the president of the MpD Political Commission in Porto Novo considers the accusations “unfounded”, as, she added, “It is already the character of this party leader to make accusations of this nature without being able to prove what he says”.
The local head of MpD said that the city council, led by Aníbal Fonseca, is “a credible institution with careful and transparent management of public affairs”.
“In fact, throughout these two mandates, there has been a positive assessment, both from the competent institutions, namely the Court of Auditors and national and international partners, as well as from the population itself, which once again entrusted a majority” to the MpD in the municipality of Porto Novo, highlighting “the investments” made by the municipality in different areas, but, “above all, in social action”.
The MpD leader also said that she finds PAICV’s position strange “when it criticizes” the city council for spending 3,500 contos on fireworks during the festive season, since, she added, Jairson Tavares himself had “the opposite opinion last year”, when he criticized the city council “for having channeled the amount that would have been invested in fireworks to purchase basic food baskets for families”.
He appealed to the head of the PAICV “to be better informed before bringing certain information to the public” and assured that the data made available by the city council team says that Christmas and end-of-year celebrations, including senior citizen parties and children’s gardens, they were around 2,500 contos.
The MpD representative clarified that in relation to investments in sport mentioned by the first secretary of PAICV, the municipal budget for 2024 foresees an amount of 22 thousand contos for the rehabilitation, construction and completion of sports infrastructures, in addition to the promotion of sport.
The construction of the covered sports hall is not included in the 2024 budget, as it is a project financed by the Government and the city council, through a loan operation that the company winning the contract will take out from the bank to later be reimbursed by the Government and the chamber, he further clarified.
Regarding the Cape Verdean Capital City of Youth initiative, MpD Porto Novo said that the evaluation made by international and national partners and by the young people themselves who participated in the national youth forum was “very positive and the best carried out so far throughout the country”.
