Africa-Press – Cape verde. Commander Pedro Pires today characterized Amílcar Cabral as an exceptional personality who “is not born every day”, and argues that we should look at him as a whole and not just after his disappearance.

Speaking to Inforpress, regarding the celebrations of January 20th, National Heroes’ Day, the president of the Amílcar Cabral Foundation highlighted that Cabral was one of the African personalities who “went beyond their time”.

“Amílcar Cabral’s great triumph is that he freed himself from the law of death as the great Portuguese poet Luís de Camões said. He is an exceptional personality within our country, in Africa, and around the world. I’m afraid of exaggerating, but just look at how it is seen and appreciated internationally”, he highlighted.

In this sense, he argued that we should look at Amílcar Cabral “whole”, and not just after his disappearance, evaluating his entire career and prestige.

“Amílcar Cabral from 1973 is not the same as 2023 or 2024 because before he was a person, now he is the memory, the remembrance and he is the myth. People who lived with Amílcar Cabral have one perception and people who didn’t live with him have another perception of his personality”, he said.

Based on his relationship with Cabral, the former Freedom of the Fatherland fighter defined him as an “exceptional person” who is not born every day, remembering his performance as leader of the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC), but also as a leader of the national liberation struggle.

Therefore, he argued, it is important that people take ownership of Amílcar Cabral, making him a traveling companion, through what was his thought, within the framework of the historical-cultural activities taking place in the country.

In other words, he indicated, participating through big things, but also that they participate through small things, for example, like a poem, a song, any song, a small meeting at a school, a high school, and even in the markets.

Pedro Pires explained that January 20th this year will be celebrated as part of Cabral’s centenary, in a year in which this national hero would be 100 years old if he were alive, and whose activities are planned to take place in the country and abroad.

Today, January 20th is celebrated, National Heroes Day, a date that honors former fighters of the country and remembers the death of Amílcar Cabral, considered one of the most charismatic, influential African leaders and a prominent figure on the African continent.

On January 20, 1973, the founder of the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC), Amílcar Cabral, was murdered in Guinea-Conakry, eight months after the unilateral declaration of Guinea-Bissau’s independence.
