Jorge Carlos Fonseca asks for tranquility when celebrating historic dates

Africa-Press – Cape verde. Jorge Carlos Fonseca defended, this Friday, the commemoration of historic dates “with tranquility”. The former President of the Republic remembers that both Independence Day and Freedom and Democracy Day are both national.

Jorge Carlos Fonseca made this call to attention in Sal, where he gave a lecture on “Freedom and Democracy”, at the invitation of the president of the Chamber of Sal, Júlio Lopes, as part of Republic Week, held from the 13th to the 20th of January.

“A good number of people associate the 20th of January or the 5th of July with National Independence, with PAIGC/PAICV, and the 13th of January, Freedom and Democracy Day, with the MpD… that is a fact”, he analyzed, reiterating, however, the dates are all national, and must be celebrated by Cape Verdeans.

Speaking to the press, Jorge Carlos Fonseca insists that the important thing is not to set one date against another, aware that it is a long way to go.

“Even today, I believe, there are these collective divisions. Because, if one date is set against another, this objective will not be achieved. But with time we will get there (…) where we celebrate our dates calmly, with the awareness that history is not made only by what we select and choose”, he said.

“Each person has their own critical view of the events, but you cannot erase photographs or history,” he said.

Considering that democracies are resisting “with difficulties”, Jorge Carlos Fonseca said, however, that democrats need to be attentive, “armed, in a good sense, ideologically, through principles and convictions, because democracy, citing a “great political”, is the “worst regime”, apart from all the others.

“Therefore, it is worth living in freedom and democracy”, he emphasized.
