Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Government of Cape Verde wants to take advantage of the next North American financial support from the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC), the value of which is yet to be defined, to invest in the areas of connectivity, climate and human capital, it announced today.
“We have three priority areas to work with the MCC program: connectivity, climate – linked to energy, water and sanitation – and human capital, so that we can guarantee conditions to accelerate the development of Cape Verde “, said the deputy Prime Minister, Olavo Correia.
In a joint press conference with the executive director of MCC, Alice Albright, in Praia, Olavo Correia pointed out that the identified areas will be worked on ” in a logic of integration, of openness to the world and sub-region, but above all to create factors of competitiveness of the Cape Verdean economy “, in line with the Government’s Strategic Plan for Sustainable Development II (PEDS II) and in line with the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Cape Verde’s ” very strong ” commitment and ” challenges ” captured the attention of the MCC to select the archipelago, in December, for a third development aid financing, explained Alice Albright.
The leader classified the country as a “wonderful partner ” and said that the next aid package will be focused on regional integration.
He also added that the team is studying the dossier to define the sectors to cover.
The delegation from the North American agency ends today a three-day visit to Cape Verde with the aim of “discussing with the Government the development process” of the third aid package for Cape Verde, announced as an eligible country in December, alongside the Tanzania and the Philippines.
The first financing, between 2005 and 2010, amounted to 84.6 million euros and served to infrastructure the country.
Two years later, a second package, worth 50.9 million euros, ran until 2017 to improve the management of water resources and sanitation, as well as property management services.
The Millennium Challenge Corporation is a development aid agency created by the US Congress in 2004, providing grants and limited-time assistance to countries that meet rigorous standards of good governance, combating corruption and respect for democratic rights.
