Sal Island: PAICV negatively assesses activity report from the Sal chamber for the year 2023

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The municipal elected representatives of the Cape Verde African Independence Party (PAICV – opposition) this Wednesday negatively assessed the Sal Municipal Council’s activity report for the economic year 2023.

The assessment was made to the press by the leader of the PAICV bench, José Paixão, who considered that the report, under discussion in the 15th ordinary session of the Municipal Assembly for the 2020-2024 mandate, is just another copy of the others that have been presented.

The municipal elected official expressed concern about the island’s problems, which, in his view, will continue because “the council is in debt, but, however, it is not included in the report”.

“It is a very extensive report with beautiful phrases from the city council, but we must say that this council has only worked on the basis of friendliness and has not complied with the report”, stated José Paixão, for whom the council “has not known how to manage its budget” and is “depleting” municipal assets.

The leader of the Sociedade em Ação para Liberdade (SAL) Group, Ravelino dos Reis, made it known that his group did not negatively appreciate the chamber’s report, but listed some aspects that could be done last year.

“The report presents a lot of data on what was done, but we are missing some annexes so that we can better understand what is in the report”, he indicated.

“In general, we denote the positive points that need to be highlighted and we only draw attention to the activities planned for the town of Terra Boa that have been noted in the reports, but which, in the meantime, nothing has been done”, explained the leader of SAL group.

The leader of the Movement for Democracy bench (MpD-party that manages the chamber), Luísa Fortes, in turn, said that her bench’s assessment of this instrument is “quite positive”.

“We know about the constraints that the chamber had during the last year, having started its mandate at a time of crisis imposed by Covid-19 and will end with war, but despite all this, it has still done extraordinary work together with the population of Sal in order to respond to the needs of the island”, explained Luísa Fortes.

For his part, the president of the Municipal Council of Sal, Júlio Lopes, considered that during the last year “a lot was done” in terms of what the plans were for the year 2023 and that “the assessment of the bench of the PAICV”.

According to the mayor, this is a chamber that is “intense in terms of work, education, sport and on a social level”.

“This is a Chamber very close to the people and, therefore, this report, in fact, reflects the activities carried out on the island in which people give a very positive assessment of the activities of the Sal chamber”, explained Júlio Lopes.

During the work of the ordinary session of the Municipal Assembly, the elected representatives also brought to the plenary session issues that have been worrying residents, with special attention to the frequent cases of violence in high schools on the island, perpetrated by rival groups.
