Africa-Press – Cape verde. The objective is to promote a healthy lifestyle and reinforce public policies to improve mental health in the country.
According to the project coordinator, Cristian Wahnon, the presentation of the program’s general guidelines will encompass all sectors of Cape Verdean society to work towards the promotion and prevention of mental health.
Cristian Wahnon pointed out that the program focuses on families, communities, the workplace, schools and, above all, the public agenda.
“Because after Covid-19, mental health has really become a concern and a challenge for everyone, it is a commitment and a priority that we must all put into practice and we hope that the entire nation is aware of this social problem”, he highlighted.
From this perspective, according to the coordinator, the creation of support centers for mentally ill patients is planned, that is, spaces with the capacity to “support” patients and their families.
“We have seen some less good events regarding mental health in the area of education, in the work environment, in the issue of alcohol and drugs, in cases of suicide, these are facts that we will work to avoid and promote a positive environment, to the point, that society knows how to recognize the symptoms and also knows where to turn to access care”, he said.
On the other hand, the Minister of Health, Filomena Gonçalves, who was present at the presentation, highlighted the Government’s commitment to creating strategies that will be based on “cutting-edge clinical practices” and the “most up-to-date scientific evidence” to face the problem.
“By adopting a multisectoral strategy, we aim to effectively overcome challenges such as psychiatric care, combating substance abuse in communities and promoting a culture of education and early awareness”, he said.
The declaration of the Year of Mental Health, according to the Government, aims to expand and qualify the network of mental health services throughout the territory, promote awareness campaigns about mental health, implement training and qualification programs for mental health professionals.
