Mosteiros: Clearing coffee growing areas is one of the city council’s goals

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The clearing of the upper coffee growing area in the central part to facilitate access to growing areas is one of the city council’s projects to encourage the practice of coffee growing in the Mosteiros.

The excavation project, according to the councilor for Culture of the Municipal Council of Mosteiros, Nelson Pires, consists of the construction of two roads connecting Cutelo Alto to Monte Velha and Cutelo Alto to Penedo Rachad, in the upper part of the municipality and with a large area of cultivation of coffee.

In addition to the clearance of the upper zone in the central part, which is seen as fundamental for the agricultural use of the municipality of Mosteiros, within the framework of the promotion and valorization of coffee, the city council has other projects.

The completion of the second phase of the coffee museum, the implementation of the coffee route that has to do with the valorization of the entire coffee production chain and the reinforcement of agriculture and green space at municipal level are some of these projects, said the councilor .

Regarding the coffee festival, the Xth edition that begins today in the city of Igreja, the highlight is the holding of a conference on “coffee museology” with the participation of two experts from the São Paulo Coffee Museum, Brazil, and whose objective, according to Nelson Pires, fits into the municipal strategy of internationalization of the coffee festival.

The Xth edition of coffee coincides with a year of low coffee production, one of the worst years and with some producers describing production as zero, which is why the councilor argued that this festival could be an opportunity to reflect on the coffee situation and what needs to be done for the sustainability of coffee farming, but also a moment to see that coffee needs to be worked towards being a unique and special product and 100 percent (%) organic.

In addition to the conference, the program for the Xth edition of Fogo Coffee Fest also includes various competitions on the coffee theme, namely poetry, painting and cake making, athletics competitions in the junior, senior and veteran categories, musical performances by artists and local groups and guests and a coffee and crafts fair.

The festival normally takes place in the last few weeks of the coffee harvest, in order to allow coffee growers to participate and provide the opportunity for guests to witness the coffee harvest.

The opening session is scheduled for 5pm today, at Praça Azambuja, in the city of Igreja, and will feature interventions from coffee producers, representatives of foreign guests and the mayor of the city council, Fábio Vieira.
