Africa-Press – Cape verde. The president of the Colmeia Association said this Tuesday that the petition, which will be delivered to the National Assembly and aims to adopt legislative measures for people with disabilities, with emphasis on those with special needs, has registered more than a thousand signatures.
Isabel Moniz shared this information with the press at the end of a march to mark World Autism Awareness Day, promoted by the Association of Parents and Friends of Children and Young People with Special Needs (Colmeia), in the city of Praia.
“Autism does not prevent me from hearing your words and feeling your love”, “Someone with autism taught me love. No words are needed”, “Autism participates in our humanity as much as our ability to dream”, “The autism is not a disease, it is just a difference” “Not every human being is autistic, every autistic is a human being” “Those who do not know our struggles will not understand our reasons” are some of the phrases contained in the march’s posters.
“The objective of the march was achieved because we managed to involve the family in the march, we also managed to involve family members in the march, children, the population and partners to understand what it is about because we still have children in hiding, families still in the period of mourning”, he highlighted.
He defended, in this sense, the need to improve responses to the issue of autism and disability, adding that it is also necessary for schools to be increasingly sensitized and involved in the cause and the need to create employment opportunities for people with disabilities. deficiency.
He mentioned that signatures are currently being collected on a petition requesting the adoption of legislative and other measures that lead to the improvement of the living conditions of people with disabilities and, in particular, people with special needs.
“Right now, we are collecting signatures for the petition, which is a series of responses that we still need in society, which has to do, for example, with early stimulation. Cape Verde needs to work on an early intervention service, with a multidisciplinary and multidisciplinary team to provide answers, not only to children born with disabilities, but also in terms of rehabilitation”, he highlighted.
He highlighted that the aforementioned petition wants to see the creation of the necessary legislation in order to create a multidisciplinary intervention team with specialized technicians, with the mission of monitoring public policies, in the field of early intervention, monitoring people with disabilities, during all phases development or adaptation.
He recalled, on the other hand, that Cape Verde has 29% of the population that still needs some type of response, indicating that the aforementioned petition is scheduled to be delivered to the National Assembly on the 16th of this month and that Colmeia intends to collect around three thousand signatures.
“At this moment, we have already exceeded a thousand signatures, but we want to achieve even more, taking into account that we want this petition to be appreciated and discussed by national deputies, so that the measures are cofigured in laws, in the different areas of social intervention”, he said, highlighting that, despite the advances made in Cape Verdean society in terms of awareness about the issue of disability, discrimination still persists and needs to be combatted.
World Autism Awareness Day was created by the United Nations (UN) in 2007, with the purpose of providing information to the population to reduce discrimination and prejudice against individuals who have Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
Autism is a health condition characterized by challenges in social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech, and nonverbal communication.
