
Africa-Press – Cape verde. The President of the Republic appealed to the Cape Verdean community residing in Madrid, the Spanish capital, to embrace Cape Verde’s challenge in the fight against Gender-Based Violence (GBV), thus contributing to the promotion of a better society.
José Maria Neves launched this appeal during his speech at the ceremony as part of the celebration of Cape Verdean Women’s Day, held by the Cape Verdean community residing in Madrid (Spain), expressing pride in the integration of Cape Verdeans in that country European.
“I wanted to take this opportunity to thank the president of the Chamber of Alcalde de Parla. Here, there are more than 120 communities from different countries around the world and one of the communities is Cape Verdean and I am very happy when there is a strong relationship between the community and local authorities. The best way to help Cape Verde is to be good citizens here in Spain, if you have good integration and fulfill your obligation as a citizen you are better positioned to demand your rights”, he declared.
She highlighted the importance of the date, considering that Cape Verdean women play a “crucial role” in the development of their communities, the country and beyond its borders.
“I wanted to pay tribute from Parla to all Cape Verdean women and the women here in Palma deserve our tribute. The Cape Verdean woman carries the ten islands of Cape Verde on her shoulders, urging her to be increasingly active”, she highlighted.
He also appealed to the Cape Verdean community residing in Madrid, to embrace Cape Verde’s challenge in the fight against GBV, thus contributing to the promotion of a better society and peace.
“We have had many cases of GBV in Cape Verde, men and women have not known how to live with each other and we have recorded many cases of femicide, many men who are taking the lives of their wives. We all have to work to have a society of peace, friendship and more brotherhood that has to start in the family,” she declared.
“Cape Verdean women were not born to be attacked, but to be loved, well treated and that is what we have to do, therefore I want to appeal to all of you to work on building a better country without violence”, he concluded.
