Artisan says she has to travel to other countries to acquire materials to make decorative pieces

Africa-Press – Cape verde. Artisan Milene Gonçalves said today that there are no stores to buy materials to make decorative pieces on the island and so she has to travel to the city of Praia or other countries such as the USA and Portugal.

The professional reported this embarrassment to Inforpress, within the scope of the agricultural crafts fair that takes place in the town of Alto São Pedro, on the sidelines of the municipality’s festivities and Saint Filipe’s Day, celebrated on May 1st.

Milene Gonçalves assured that the decorative pieces such as glass vases, plates, paintings and baskets are made manually, so they take at least a week to be ready, a perspective that may change depending on the island’s weather conditions.

“I follow fashions for decorative pieces and apply them to my arts to decorate the interior of houses. I have already started making jewelry, especially at this time of year when there is a greater demand from the public, and also smaller pieces to facilitate transport for those visiting the island,” he said, noting that the practice is a hobby, as it performs another function.

He said that he has already participated a few times in fairs promoted during the island’s festivities and that more important than selling products is receiving feedback, encouragement and motivation from tourists and citizens who visit the island at this time of year.
