Africa-Press – Cape verde. The President of the Republic appealed to Cape Verdean students at the Bragança Polytechnic Institute (IPB) to take advantage of the academic environment and train themselves and then help in the transformation process of Cape Verde.

The appeal was made on the afternoon/evening of Sunday, 19th, during a meeting that José Maria Neves, in the company of the ambassador of Cape Verde in Portugal, Eurico Monteiro, held with the student community at IPB, which hosts 1,200 Cape Verdean students, the largest group, among approximately 10,500 students from 70 countries.

“This is the time to study, investigate, learn and acquire the skills and abilities to better serve the development of Cape Verde. My message in relation to students has been very positive, in the sense that they are the essential protagonists of the changes we need to make in Cape Verde. It’s time to learn, to create new ideas, to be entrepreneurs and to participate in the country’s transformational process”, he stressed.

For José Maria Neves, by welcoming this number of Cape Verdean students, IPB is doing its job, with Cape Verde and the municipalities also doing their part, being aware that when they finish their studies, they can give their contribution to the country, even though we are outside Cape Verde.

During the meeting that lasted a few hours, the students asked the President of the Republic several questions, ranging from current affairs to international and national issues, including the creation of conditions for return to the country, employment opportunities, the functioning of Cape Verdean justice, among other issues.

The head of state, however, clarified that he does not have powers over some of the issues.

The night ended with the final of the fourth edition of the IPB Futsal World Cup, with the President of the Republic, José Maria Neves, accompanied by the president of the IPB, Orlando Rodrigues, and the president of the Association of African Students in Bragança (AEAB), Romana Brandão , handing over the cup to first place, São Tomé and Príncipe, who beat Mozambique 3-1, in the event that took place at the Arnaldo Pereira gymnasium pavilion.

The meeting with the student community is part of the visit of the head of state to the northern region of Portugal (Bragança, São João da Madeira and Vila Real), during the four-day visit, from the 18th to the 21st of May, José Maria Neves, At the invitation of IPB, he participates today in the opening of the Africa Week celebrations, an event organized by this institute, together with AEAB.

Even today, the President of the Republic will also have the opportunity to establish contacts with local authorities, at which he will have a reception by the President of the Chamber of Bragança, Paulo Jorge Almendra Xavier.

On Tuesday, 21st, José Maria Neves will visit the University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro (UTAD), in Vila Real, as well as having the opportunity to visit the School of Agricultural Sciences at that university.

In Vila Real, the President of the Republic will meet with the community of Cape Verdean students from the institution that is preparing, with the University of Cape Verde (Uni-CV), the launch of bachelor’s and master’s courses in IT and Agricultural Sciences, as well as maintaining cooperative relations with the Cape-Verde Olympic Committee, the Institute of Cultural Heritage and the Institute of Youth and Sports.
