Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Prime Minister, Ulisses Correia e Silva participates in the 4th International Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS4), which will take place at the American University of Antigua, in Antigua and Barbuda, from 27 to 30 May.

“I will make my intervention on the 27th of May, defending a differentiated approach to SIDS, taking into account Cape Verde’s great vulnerability to external economic and environmental shocks, as well as its strong dependence on tourism, a sector heavily affected by the crisis. of COVID-19”, wrote the Head of Government on his Facebook page.

SIDS leaders will meet with the main purpose of assessing the ability of SIDS to achieve sustainable development, including the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and adopting the new Development Action Plan of SIDS for the next decade.

The conference, organized by Antigua and Barbuda, featured three regional preparatory meetings and one Inter-regional, the latter held in the city of Praia, from 30 August to 1 September 2023.

The Prime Minister further wrote that the four-day Conference will focus on presenting specific initiatives and concrete results to address critical challenges facing these Island States, including the climate crisis, biodiversity loss and rising debt.

These Leaders, the private sector, civil society and young people will come together to promote new ideas and raise new pledges of support, covering critical issues for the future of SIDS.

“I will also participate in a High-Level Meeting on Resource Mobilization for SIDS, promoted by the Secretary-General of the United Nations with international financial institutions, development banks and major donors, to be held on May 28, 2024”, he informed the PM.

Additionally, he continued, Cape Verde will highlight its agreement with Portugal to transform debt into climate and environmental financing during the event “How to Use Debt for Climate Swaps as a Financing and Aid Efficiency Tool through Collaborative Partnerships”, organized by World Bank on May 27th.

“This conference represents an opportunity for Cape Verde to consolidate the foundations of its emerging leadership in the SIDS group and prepare for a new phase of foreign policy, systematically addressing strategic and critical issues for the sustainable future of the country and other island states”, finished.

The Small Island Developing States (SIDS) or Small Island Developing States (SIDS) are a group of 58 island countries and territories, 38 of which are part of the United Nations, with common structural vulnerabilities.
