Government launches debate on promoting transparency

Africa-Press – Cape verde. On Wednesday, the Government will launch a debate on public policies to promote transparency and accessibility, within the scope of a multilateral partnership, the executive announced today.

The event entitled “Open Government” will be organized by the Ministry of Modernization of the State and Public Administration (MMEAP) and aims to bring together representatives from the public and private sectors, academics, civil society and the journalistic class.

The meeting comes within the scope of a multilateral initiative, the Open Government Partnership, launched in September 2011 by eight countries: Brazil, Indonesia, Mexico, Norway, Philippines, South Africa, United Kingdom and USA.

Cape Verde joined the initiative in 2015 and has already created two action plans.

The debate comes days after the National Statistics Institute (INE) released the results of the third survey on Governance, Peace and Security, referring to 2023, according to which Cape Verdeans feel less and less that politicians respond to their needs.

In relation to previous surveys, “the data shows that this perception has decreased in recent years, going from 17.1% [of the population residing in the archipelago] in 2013, to 15.7% in 2016 and 14.2% in 2023 ”.

Less than half of the population (39.8%) considers decision-making processes in governance “inclusive and adequate”.

From the analysis of the survey data, it is also clear that 46.6% of the population declared to be satisfied or very satisfied with the way democracy has worked in Cape Verde – even so, compared to the 2016 survey, “there was a decrease of 18 percentage points and 15.9 percentage points in relation to 2013 data”.
