Minister of Culture and Creative Industries receives a courtesy visit from the General Director of ARIPO

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Minister of Culture and Creative Industries, Abraão Vicente, received on the afternoon of this Wednesday, 5th, a courtesy visit from the Director General of the African Regional Intellectual Property Organization (ARIPO), Bemanya Twebaze.

The General Director is in Cape Verde as part of the 3rd edition of the Conference of Heads of Intellectual Property Offices of ARIPO Member States which takes place from the 6th to the 8th of June in the city of Praia.

According to the Government’s official website, Cape Verde has made progress on the issue of Intellectual Property. In June 2022, it joined ARIPO and has been complying with measures and legislation to protect rights and IP. There is a very strong relationship between IP management entities in Cape Verde and African organizations, the World Intellectual Property Organization.

During today’s meeting, which was attended by the President of the Board of Directors of IGQPI, Ana Paula Spencer and members of ARIPO, Director of Transformation and Business Development, Nkgare Phirinyane, the Financial Director, Ben Mulenga, Senior Administrative Associate of Protocol and Eventos, Irene Mukwenha and the Executive Assistant to the General Director of ARIPO, Manuel Chipuka, Cape Verde’s efforts in registering and safeguarding Intellectual Property and Copyright were evident.

This also allowed us to reinforce the credibility that the country has gained in the work it has been carrying out and in its interests, in recent years, in these two important sectors. “The arrival of the General Director of ARIPO to Cape Verde, once again, shows that Cape Verde, as a whole, but also private entities are doing their job. This is good for giving credibility to Cape Verde”, he stated.

Through the Official Website, the Governor warns that the country needs to produce more knowledge. “Today the world, as the DG of ARIPO says, is managed by the knowledge economy. Whoever produces knowledge has the right to it for a period of time, which will make commercial development easier. Therefore, the message is to the many startups that are developing technologies in various sectors to know if the work is protected by Intellectual Property, if the technology will be profitable in the future”.

Furthermore, he emphasized the importance of companies and startups registering their brand with the responsible entity in Cape Verde, as a way of protecting their work and their IP.
