Africa-Press – Cape verde. The government announced today the start of the first phase of the Cape Verdean Diaspora Mapping Project in the World, with the first technical mission moving to São Tomé and Príncipe. The end of this mission will culminate in the holding of the First International Round Table, in Portugal, on the 22nd of June, at the Cabo Verde Cultural Center in Lisbon.
The National Statistics Institute (INE), together with the Ministry of Communities and the World Bank, announced the mission to São Tomé and Príncipe, which reflects the great importance reserved for Cape Verdean communities residing in this country, in understanding the migratory phenomenon that characterizes the populations of the islands.
According to a joint press release, the completion of the mission definitely marks the beginning of the preparation process for this statistical operation, proposed by the Government, led by INE, and financed by the World Bank, as one of the country’s largest development partners..
“This Project aims to respond to one of the central challenges of the Government Program of this IX legislature (2021 – 2026), PEDS II and the Strategic Plan for Communities, giving centrality to the Cape Verdean Diaspora, both in the paradigm shift in relation to culture of the country’s governance, as well as in its integration process in favor of its sustainable development, framing it in the process of production, systematization and dissemination of official statistical information, as a fundamental strategic pillar in the planning of Cape Verde’s development process” reads- if in the statement.
Furthermore, with this major statistical operation, we seek to know where the Cape Verdeans who decided to emigrate throughout history are, how many there are, who they are and how they live in the Diaspora, defining their profile, as part of the expatriate Cape Verdean population. in more than 40 countries around the world, so that it is possible to assess and project their real living conditions and availability to strategically engage in the country’s development process.
In June 2023, the Government approved the beginning of the process of mapping the Cape Verdean diaspora, giving INE the role of executing the project, with the main objective of knowing the profile of emigrated Cape Verdeans and finding out about their situation.
Mapping will be carried out in all countries that host Cape Verdean communities with a view to updating and facilitating the production of official statistics.
