Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Lantuna Association recommended this Monday the authorities more publicize the marine protected species in Cape Verde to make known the society about marine biodiversity in the archipelago.
“Most people know more about sea turtles, but there are other species, from sea and land birds, sharks and plants that are preserved,” Ana Veiga, executive director of this non-governmental organization, said in an interview with Inforpress.
According to this official, they found that, for example, not all fishermen are aware of some species of shark that are protected and do not know the legislation, namely the Protection Status.
However, it advanced that the second phase of a study on the fishing effort takes place, where the fish that is caught, for example, in the town of Porto Mosquito, in Ribeira Grande de Santiago, is evaluated.
The research aims to know the type and size of the species captured, and compare the data over time, in order to verify if there was a decrease or not and if there was illegal capture.
“As part of the study, unfortunately, we detected protected species that are captured, mainly the turtle, and intentionally, because there is an illegal trade [of the meat of this species],” he said.
He stressed, however, that the team has been doing a job of raising awareness among the fishermen of Porto Mosquito for the conservation of animals, for example with the types of fishing gear.
Ana Veiga also announced that a formation is planned to enable sea men on how to release the birds of the hook in the case of some unwanted catch.
The Natural Park of the Bay of Hell and Mount Angra (PNBIMA), known for having cliffs of more than 500 meters, is a protected area since April 2021 and represents the largest colony of seabirds in Santiago.
The reserve not only has seabirds, but is also a feeding area for sea turtles, dolphins and whales
